The container ship Contship Jet has sunk in the Black Sea after three maritime drones struck it off Bulgaria on Wednesday — and all 18 of its crew survived. The Liberian-flagged vessel was hit a little before 1 p.m. local time about 21 nautical miles southeast of the coastal town of Shabla, near Cape Kaliakra in northeastern Bulgaria, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters. The crew evacuated the vessel and were taken on board rescue vessels of the Bulgarian Navy and border police, according to the state news agency BTA. None of the 18 crew members — 14 Filipinos and four Ukrainians — was injured, Bulgarian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Kiril Mihaylov said. But the ship itself did not survive the night: Mihaylov announced that the vessel sank during the night, and that 20 of its 421 containers had fallen overboard and were drifting at sea.

What happened to the Contship Jet?

Three separate strikes in the middle of the day, on a routine commercial run. The ship was en route from Israel's port of Haifa to Constanta in Romania; it was not immediately clear what the 421 containers on board were carrying, AP reported. A tanker was dispatched to assist the vessel, and some of the crew members evacuated onto a life raft near the ship — while, Bulgarian National Radio reported, a drone was heading towards them by sea, posing a threat to the sailors' lives. The Bulgarian Navy sent three vessels to the scene. The rescued sailors arrived at Varna's Sea Station on Wednesday night and were being transported to the port city of Varna for medical checks, with the ship's owner having arranged hotel accommodation through its local agent, Mihaylov said. The ship's owner, Contships Management, confirmed the attack and a company official said all the crew were safe and ashore; a maritime security source with knowledge of the matter said the ship had been badly damaged and was listing, Reuters reported. By Thursday morning, that listing had become a sinking.

What is the environmental risk from the sinking?

Twenty drifting containers and a hazardous manifest, under active investigation. According to the captain of the stricken ship, the containers on board were carrying various fuels and other types of hazardous cargo, Mihaylov said. The ship's manifest, as reported by BNR, included lithium-ion batteries, corrosive liquids and acids, flammable liquids, ethanol solutions, household chemicals and plastics. Bulgaria's Ministry of Environment and Water has launched an investigation into possible pollution of the Black Sea following the incident, but no visible signs of pollution had been detected so far. Teams from the Basin Directorate were to collect seawater samples on Thursday at five coastal locations: Durankulak, Shabla, Cape Kaliakra, Byala, and Sozopol. Experts from the Executive Agency Maritime Administration who inspected the vessel informed Varna Regional Governor Mario Smarkov that no significant adverse effects on the marine environment or coastline were expected at this stage — an assessment, not a clearance, while the sampling is carried out.

Who attacked the Contship Jet?

Nobody has claimed it, and Bulgaria's navy says it cannot say where the drones came from. "We had no forces or assets in the immediate area that could reach them quickly enough to intercept and destroy them," Mihaylov said, adding that the drones could have been launched from anywhere and that the incident demonstrates the state needs to invest more in the Bulgarian Navy. The attribution argument around the wider series runs as follows, and every part of it is contested: Ukraine has blamed the attacks on Russia; Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev has said the attacks appear to benefit Russia, and told his country's parliament earlier this month that "the logic points in that direction … The problem is that we cannot prove it"; Moscow has denied involvement; and Russia has not taken responsibility for the attacks. Turkish Defence Minister Yasar Guler, for his part, warned both Russia and Ukraine on Wednesday against carrying out attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, and said Ankara reserved the right to take legal action against the strikes, Reuters reported. This article attributes the Contship Jet attack to no one, because no source opened attributes it with evidence.

How does this fit the Black Sea shipping pattern?

It is the fifth ship targeted by drones in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, in a month that has already killed and disappeared seafarers. The attacks in Bulgaria and Romania's exclusive economic zones threaten a global shipping route and have left two people dead, with at least 25 still missing, AP reported; drone attacks on merchant ships off Bulgaria have likely killed some two dozen international seafarers in recent weeks, according to government statements on missing crew members, and at least six merchant vessels have been attacked, Reuters reported. In early October, two commercial ships were attacked in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone, and a week later the Guinea-Bissau-flagged HS Dignity sank after being struck about 17 nautical miles east of Shabla, while the Malta-flagged Chelsea 3 was damaged in a separate attack about 17 nautical miles east of Byala. On October 23, a foreign-flagged cargo ship capsized and sank following a suspected drone strike about 13 nautical miles off Constanta. The Contship Jet was struck while defence ministers from Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey were meeting in Sofia for trilateral talks focused on Black Sea security; in a statement after the talks, the three NATO countries strongly condemned the drone attacks on commercial vessels and called for an "immediate cessation of attacks that threaten commercial ships, maritime infrastructure and the safety of maritime activities," and agreed on stronger intelligence sharing, early warning capabilities and coordination. On October 15, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said NATO had "strengthened our posture along the eastern flank including with increasing counter-drone capabilities" in the face of the strikes. The Contship Jet's crew came home. The pattern that nearly killed them is, on the record of the last month, still running.
